Do we need lemon water first thing in the morning?


Healthy habits are great to implement, but only if they suit you and your lifestyle most importantly.


One healthy habit that tends to be something we should all be doing to kick start digestion first thing in the morning is drinking lemon water.


Now if you enjoy this then, by all means, continue to do it, however, if you are only doing this ritual in the morning because you think you have to and really don't enjoy starting your day this way then don't.


Lemons are high in vitamin c and contain some great micronutrients, however, there is no evidence to back the theory of "lemon water kick starting digestion". For some people, this is a great way to set them up for a "healthier day" ahead, which comes down to personal preference.


Did you know your digestive system goes to sleep when you do, and when you wake up, it also wakes up, this is why sometimes the first thing you need to do when you wake up in the morning is go to the toilet and pass a stool.


The best things that you can do for better digestion is sleep and hydrate. Ensure you are getting at least 7 hours per night of sleep so your digestive system is getting some rest too and the first thing you put into your body when you wake is water, yes just plain old water will do the trick! You also want to make sure you are staying active daily (formal exercise, walking, outdoor activities, etc) to keep the body moving, trying to eliminate stress, drinking less alcohol, and eating plenty of vegetables (7 + per day).


Some of us, unfortunately, suffer from digestive issues or disease and for this, you are better off seeking help from a registered dietitian or your GP. But for the majority of us in the general population category, all we need to do is focus more on getting those important hours of sleep every night, staying hydrated, and active daily. This will all contribute to better digestion without needing to spend hundreds of dollars per month on supplements and going on crazy diets that don't allow you to eat certain foods or some no food at all!


If you can start implementing what I have mentioned above you will notice such a change in your digestion and your health overall! Start by trying to include one new healthy habit per week, if you do this, soon these habits will just become apart of your usual routine and apart of your lifestyle.
